Bottles and Knife or Botellas y cuchillos"(1912) by Juan Gris is a painting in the analytical cubism form, representing bottles, a knife and light. Like other cubist paintings, the painters highlighted the multiple viewpoints and the geometric parts. Gris uses blue, black, gray and ochre color, but these are not as prominent as the repetitive imagery. Literal transparency represents clarity associated with glass and other materials while phenomenal transparency is the illusion of transparency most common when architectural tricks and spatial layering are used and where people see reflections. The Bottles and Knife painting focuses phenomenal transparency, which is created conceptually in the viewers mind because the artist used the cubist technique and abstraction.
The dominant images in the figure-ground are the bottles and the images occupy a big space in the painting, while the knife on the ground and the painting has a small empty space.
