Your chapter 6a reading explored the philosophies of the Enlightenment era, heavily influencing the Rococo and Neoclassical art movements. In particular we looked at the opulence of the aristocrats in Rococo paintings. This movement was filled with lighthearted depictions of the luxurious lifestyle of the wealthy and powerful (any wonder why there was a Revolution?). Can you think of an artist today that depicts modern aristocracy? Social media posts by celebrities give us a pretty good peek at this life (especially now that we are all practicing social distancing at home).
Research a contemporary artist today, working in any medium, that you believe depicts the opulence and luxury of the wealthy in their compositions. Choose one work by this artist to share with your group by embedding an image in your reply. If this work is in film, please provide a link to a short clip, or embed a film still.

MBE is the short form for Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. He is known for his life-sized mannequins dressed in expensive and colorful Dutch-wax fabrics which explore the roving viewpoints of post-colonialism and colonialism through parody and whimsy in a contemporary lens. Shonibare depicts the opulence and luxury of the wealthy in his compositions.
Shonibare is a British-Nigerian artist who lives in London. His works mainly focus on exploring colonialism, cultural identity, and post-colonialism in the contemporary context of globalization. He is best known for the fact that his whimsical mannequins are life-sized and they are dressed in expensive Dutch-wax fabrics to form African prints and patterns ("Yinka Shonibare, CBE (RA) | Welcome", 2020). The costumes he uses in his works are Victorian, and Victorian was the era when Africa was colonized by the British. The Dutch-wax period costumes that he uses are an Indonesian-designed fabric referred to as batik which has been greatly assimilated in the West African culture by the rich. Shonibare’s work continues to evaluate the authenticity of different historical moments. However, the fabrics which were to be used in connoting African identity despite not being from Africa originally remain a constant coincidence that works to his advantage as a conceptual artist.
