Videoconferencing is a technology where video and audio data is transmitted over a network to establish an audio-visual call. Video communication has become a common phenomenon today and has attracted a ton of companies to provide video conferencing solutions, with the popular ones being Google Meet, Cisco Webex, Teams, and Zoom. The concept of video conferencing was conceived as early as the 1870s at Bell Labs (Mills 39). It was until 1927 that AT&T came up with working video communication, marking the beginning of the videoconferencing technology competitions from different companies. The advent of the internet eventually led to the invention of the various videoconferencing tools available today. According to Statista, the global videoconferencing market was valued at $14.6 billion in 2021, and the market is projected to almost double in value by 2026 (Sava par. 1).
Videoconferencing offers a wide range of benefits to individuals and the corporate world. The technology drastically cut downs on infrastructure costs. Without having to build physical premises and structures to hold meetings, travel costs are significantly reduced since meetings can be held anywhere at any time. The reduction of movement also plays an integral role in addressing climate change as it reduces the amount of greenhouse gas emitted by limiting the use of automobiles and jets to and from workplaces.
Collaboration and teamwork are of the essence in the corporate world and even in a person's ordinary life. Videoconferencing technologies enhance teamwork and collaboration through a myriad of meetups and video calls that can be set up with just a few clicks. Unlike audio calls, videoconferencing tools enable the establishment of human connection, just as is the case with physical meetings, further enhancing cohesiveness and human productivity.
