Ethnography Guidelines
For this essay, you will focus on a specific group of people and, after doing research, write about what makes that specific group unique using the information that you discovered during your research. Writing an ethnography will test your research skills by bringing them out of academia and into the field to engage with the culture/subculture that you choose. You might have to volunteer somewhere or go to a park where there is a gathering, or engage, somehow, with some sort of online community - whatever topic, you will need to go into the field to do part of your research.
You may also think of this argument as your dominant impression, or the main point you most wish to establish and communicate throughout, but be sure that you remain objective in your observations and careful not to misrepresent the culture and group you write about.
The essay will also focus on a narrative and a journalistic style, telling the story of a group of people using various types of research.
Your ethnography paper should also meet the following criteria:
• Unity/Support: The essay establishes a unique thesis about a specific group of people/culture and stays true to the primary thesis using research to support your observations. It uses information from at least 6 scholarly/credible sources and properly cites those sources with in-text citations and works cited page. Sources should be a variety of types (books, journal articles, websites, newspapers, magazines, etc.). Paraphrased, summarized, and quoted information should be carefully introduced and integrated into the essay (be sure to indicate where the researched information is from and include in-text citations). Should show that you are engaging in a conversation with the sources by discussing any source information used and connecting it to the thesis.
• Language & Personal Style, Coherence & Sentence Skills: The paper employs effective organization and transition phrases/words to move smoothly from one idea to the next. The paper is well-organized overall and well-crafted at the sentence level, with care taken to use clear, specific language. Grammatical mistakes have been identified and eliminated utilizing whatever strategies and assistance is necessary.
Paper should be double spaced Times New Roman 12pt font and uploaded as a single Microsoft Word file (.docx or .doc) to the appropriate port on Moodle by the due date and time. The single file includes your essay and MLA Works Cited page.

Society is complex and consists of individuals from different walks of life. In any society, people realize that they need each other. Consequently, individuals with shared interests and goals come together to form groups. Through such groupings, people can advance their interests. According to Gee (7), every individual belongs to a discourse community, which comes with instructions on how to act and talk. In other words, one has particular abilities that make them belong to specific groups. One of the dominant groups of people is golfers. These are individuals who play golf either for pleasure or as a profession. Professional golfers engage in the game with the view of participating in competitions. They receive payments or other financial rewards because of their skill or reputation. Some play golf for pleasure. Such individuals may not necessarily get any financial reward for playing the game. However, they do it for pleasure rather than financial reward. Golfers form a community that has unique characteristics. This paper analyzes the characteristics of golfers to demonstrate the aspects that make the group unique.
Golfers build communities where people would like to live. Golf course communities provide numerous opportunities for people to live together in close-knit areas. Golf course communities do not imply that someone has to be a golfer to reside there. Some people live in such communities but have never played the game. Golf communities are attractive because of the residents' extra amenities (Nicholls and Crompton). The areas tend to have tennis courts, playgrounds, and clubhouses which can keep the residents busy. Because of the easy access to the golf course, residents can meet and socialize. As a result, golf courses tend to have tight-knit communities. Such communities usually hold regular events to bring the residents and golfers together. Such activities usually bring people together and help cement the communities. Such a place provides a beautiful environment for golfers and other residents. Golf courses tend to be carefully manicured, making them beautiful places where golfers can hand them out to their families. Places with golf courses attract high-end investments like restaurants and other businesses. Owning a property near such a place means taking advantage of the amenities offered (Cole and Hueber 99). It is also a chance to get clients when tournaments are happening. Hence, golfers are instrumental in developing the communities around them.
Belonging to a golf community confers members with various advantages. Firstly, it stimulates fellowship among the participants. People sign up for golf membership and are looking for like-minded individuals. Here, individuals discover that they share some common values. Such a conducive environment stimulates friendly feelings among the members. Because the members share a common interest in golf, they experience more fellowship. Such an environment creates and strengthens friendships among the members. Secondly, golf communities enhance the competitiveness of the members. When playing golf, it is natural to aspire to win.
