Sikhism Religion
Sikhism is an Indian religion besides Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. The religion was initiated in the Punjab area in South Asia, currently referred to as Pakistan. It was born when Guru Nanak began teaching the concept of faith in 1500EC. Their religious understanding of faith is unique and differs from that of Hinduism and Islam (Nesbite & Sumaira 4). The Sikhs do not believe in Jesus and God because. Their teaching indicates that the Supreme Being, God, is neither born nor dead. Their religious scripture is known as Punjabi, meaning 'the first book.' The sacred scripture is also called Granth and contains a collection of about 6,000 hymns obtained from the Sikh Guru.
The holiest shrine for Sikhism is in the city of Amritsar. It is also known as the Golden temple and was originally called the temple of Gurudwara. The religious place was later renamed in 2005 to Harmandir Sahib, which means 'the house of god.' In Sikhism, eating pork and any non-vegan products is forbidden, and anyone that consumes them is not regarded pure (Nesbite & Sumaira p4).
