Other (Not Listed) Instructions:

Please cite title, page and if applicable, line number for any textual references as footnotes or simply parenthetically in the body of your paper. No need for a bibliography.
Please answer the following questions. You do not need to mesh them all into a single paper.
1.) The Qur'an, The Rule of St Benedict and the Kagero Diary rest on certain assumptions about what it is to be human and how one ought to live. Using evidence from the three texts, explain the understanding of human nature that emerges from each. Which one coincides most with your own?
2.) What is the significance of the use of 'shifting' pronouns in both the Kagero Diary and the Qur'an? How is it used as a way to create gender balance (especially in societies where there was very little)? a.) How does the use of pronouns challenge the 'Western' concept of the individual? Please give specific examples.
3.) The Qur'an, The Rule of St Benedict and the Kagero Diary all offer us, as readers, insight into the past, into foreign (and sometimes familiar) worlds. This insight is necessarily filtered through our own mindsets and milieux, as well as those of the authors. What are some tools we might use to navigate this seeming sea of subjectivity? What kind of information is useful in delivering us accurate information about the past? What makes a source reliable?

What is to be human?
Question 1: The Quran.
The Quran answers “what is to be human” in the characteristics he portrays according to how God created him. When the man was created, four aspects distinguished him from other forms of creation and clearly described him as the human: creation, light, the natural configuration, and the spirit. In the aspect creation, the Quran shows in many of its verses how God is responsible for the creation of a human. This aspect is one of the reasons that humans are humans. God created them in his two hands. In the chapter called “sad” or the letter, God says to Satan “O Iblīs! What prevented you from prostrating unto one I created with my two Hands?” (Quran 38:75). The light, according to the Quran there is a light that has been bestowed upon every human; it is this light that allows humans to have power over everything.
"On a day God will not disgrace the Prophet and those believing along with him, their light emanating before them and to their right. They plead, “Our Lord complete for us our light and forgive us. Surely, you have power over all things.” (Quran 66:8). The natural configuration is the way we are created to look like “Fiţrah.” The Quran shows that we are created with a unique body configuration and nobody should alter what God created. Lastly, there is the spirit which resides within humans. It is the same as the sense and intellectual capabilities that enable humans to be human.
The Quran continues to guide human on how they ought to live; it states that they have to live responsibly, with unity between themselves a, with justice, with goodness and with the utmost love for all nature.
St Benedicts rule
The St Benedicts rule describes human more the same as Christian. A being created by God to represent him on earth. In his likeness humans are created; they are intellects and have the power to rule over other creations. St Benedict's rule insists on the ability of humans to work and together in a communal way to foster peace. Zuidema, Jason depicts St Benedicts as a man who not only followed the religious doctrines, but he also modified them so that humans can live within the period (456-469).
St Benedicts provides a guideline on how humans should live by saying that, they should live communally where everybody understands the importance of working. He insists humans should live in a way that they can balance between prayer and work. These two are both equal and important.
The Kagero Diary
According to the kagero, being human is mostly associated with how one looks. Michitsuna no Haha is so negative about how she looks even though she considered to be the third most beautiful woman of that time thinks she is not as attractive as other, but she is bright, and this leads to her quote “scarcely human” (Miller 185)
The diary tries to show how as humans there should be no time one should be trapped in her loneliness, we should live free of that, as it is seen in the diary bringing depression, unhappiness, and unfaithfulness. Keene says that the things written in that diary did not necessarily happen to Mich...
