Thesis: The War by Timothy Findley and Medicine River rely on a narrative approach to inform readers about colonial history, particularly about war and nationhood.
I. Nationhood is based on familial, technological, or military participation in the war.
A. “He died for King and Country—fighting the war to end all wars” (Fidley 55).
B. The characters romanticize death, and they regard it as the ultimate price to pay for being a good citizen.
C. Robert decides to join the army as a means to escape his guilt and to avoid the strained relationship with his parents.
D. A war occurs between the rescuing troops and the tribe.
II. Feeling of community is essential, and some characters are viewed as outcasts if they go against the norm, like Robert, who has a different perspective about death and life in comparison to others in the community.
