Thesis: The War by Timothy Findley and Medicine River rely on a narrative approach to inform readers about colonial history, particularly about war and nationhood.
I. Nationhood is based on familial, technological, or military participation in the war.
A. “He died for King and Country—fighting the war to end all wars” (Fidley 55).
B. The characters romanticize death, and they regard it as the ultimate price to pay for being a good citizen.
C. Robert decides to join the army as a means to escape his guilt and to avoid the strained relationship with his parents.
D. A war occurs between the rescuing troops and the tribe.
II. Feeling of community is essential, and some characters are viewed as outcasts if they go against the norm, like Robert, who has a different perspective about death and life in comparison to others in the community.
* “In all of them—on every page, the drawings were of animals…Robert’s was the only human form. Modified and mutated—he was one with the others” (Fidley 81).
* Robert is one of the characters who liked animals, particularly horses. He disagrees with his mother’s instructions to kill the rapid after Rowena’s death.
* A dog and horse accompany Robert, and he also frees more horses that were on a train.
