Imperative to the debate is the fact that emphatic listening is a skill that trumps all listening skills when seeking to understand, and then be understood. Further, covey mentions synergy as a habit for effective people. Why does synergy qualify in the list of seven habits of highly effective people? It enables people to value each other’s differences. John Madden is quoted to have said “coaches have to watch for what they don’t what to see and listen to what they don’t want to hear.” Exceptional as it is, that is John Madden portraying synergy and emphatic listening skills. He listens to what he does not want to hear as tool for seeking to be understood, which implies that he values other people’s differences.
Do not just begin, begin, and keep the end in mind. I am trying to allude to Covey for asserting that accomplishing goals is another effective trait of highly effective people. Specifically, Al Michaels, Madden’s broadcasting partner, once described Madden as a broadcaster who worked hard in his craft and stayed true to his objective.
