The critical approach that use be used is :
gender criticism and psychological theories, examine the way that Mrs. Mallard has had her gender identity and ability to know the world around her controlled by the men in her life. Then, account for how the story ends -- why does it happen that way, and how seriously do we take the last line of the story?
4.Use the theoretical framework you have established to interpret/examine the importance of the details of the short story that you included in your summary.
As you discuss the short story you read, assume that your reader has not read the same story, but is capable of understanding you and wants to know what you have to say, as long as you explain the details of the story to him or her where necessary. Psychoanalysis and Gender Criticism: Literary Analysis on Kate Chopin's The Story of an Hour
Kate Chopin's The Story of an Hour dares to touch people's conventional mindset, especially when it comes to marriage and family. The conservative standard of people, if we speak of marriage and family, is that families should be kept intact by matrimony. Conservative people believe that being loyal to your family keeping the members together are the wisest decisions for everyone despite any situation. This thinking is what the story refuses to include in its narrative and that fact appeals to me the most. The short story denies the social standard and roles made for genders. I like how the story put simply and yet intricately the experience and true feelings of women tied to their respective roles set by the society.
The Story of an Hour reveals Mrs. Mallard's true feelings about her marital relationship with her husband. It starts off with the news of Mr. Mallard's death that gives the dilemma of telling the news to the wife who is with a heart condition. Upon hearing the news, Mrs. Mallard reacts like what people expect her; she cries and locks herself in their room. But what happens to her in the room is what changes the Course of the narrative. The people outside the bedroom assume Mrs. Mallard is taking it hard to accept the news. On the other side of the door, Mrs. Mallard actually realizes what her husband's death means to her life. However, the story ends with Mr. Mallard alive and safe from the accident people thought he has died from. The last line of the story intrigues the people of the true intention of the narrative. Mrs. Mallard dies of heart disease, "a joy that kills" (Chopin).
The story's plot leans on the talks of gender and its psychological relativity. With that being said, this paper will look at the story in the lens of gender criticism and psychoanalysis. Gender criticism and psychoanalysis have a history together in which they talk about the behavior of women and the people around them in the past and what these behaviors entail about how society has given meaning to the behavior of women.
