What is Capitalism, Anyway?
Adam Smith and Karl Marx are famous for their arguments about the economy. They developed the arguments around capitalism and communism, respectively. The two economic philosophers had similar and divergent views on the economy at the same time. Marx first builds on Smith's argument, but he breaks up with the idea halfway.
Smith believed in the power of labor in the economy. According to him, labor power input helps the society generate wealth. However, according to Smith, the labor benefits the worker because he earns wages (Smith & Cannan 4). Marx believed in labor and called it the "labor power," which is the significant difference between the two (Marx & Friedrich 14). According to Marx, labor is a commodity that the workers sell to the rich (capitalists) in exchange for wages. Marx notes that the workers are often exploited and underpaid.
