The Great Cathedral Mystery
Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral Dome in Florence is the largest source of mystery, being the largest Dome on earth, larger than the statue of liberty in the United States of America. The Dome remains mysterious as the builder did not leave behind his work blueprint, which is believed to have been built 600 years ago. According to engineers, the architect used approximately 40,000 tonnes of mortar and over 4 million bricks to construct the Dome. The Florence cathedral dome was created by Filippo Brunelleschi, who left behind an imprint of his work. He was trained as a goldsmith and had no expertise in architecture. His work remains a mystery as he did not leave behind his work. This prompted experts to devote their work to establishing how the cathedral was built to defy the forces of gravity. Massimo Ricci, a professor of architecture at the University of Florence, dedicated his time to finding out how the cathedral was built. Even though Ricci devoted his life to finding the secret behind the construction of the Dome, he is not clear as to how the cathedral was built, but rather seems to compete with Fillipo’s masterpiece, which stood the test of time.
