Paying College Athletes
In the current time, amateur athletics within major college level has become a big business. It is packaged, marketed and sold just like any other commercial products. In fact, this business is earning a lot of money. For instant, in 1989 NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) basket tournament garnered more than $70 million in gross receipts. Similarly, football tournaments between 1988 and 1989 generated $66 million. The sale of radio and television rights to ordinary season games yielded extra income to schools that are NCAA members. A college athletic program that is successful can generate considerable indirect revenues (Goldman 206). In this paper, I argue that college athletes should be paid every time they participate in a tournament.
The athletes who are responsible for the revenues collected by NCAA are not given direct payment. However, NCAA offers educational sponsorships and caters for specified expenses incurred by the athletes. College athletes are also restricted from earning outside income by the NCAA rules. Consequently, the athlete’s students have less money because of the restriction and the expenses they incur (Goldman 207).
