Three Types of Horizontal Gene Transfer
In bacteria, there are three primary mechanisms of horizontal gene transfer, namely transduction, transformation, and conjugation. Several steps are included in the transduction process. Generally, this is used to relocate the deoxyribonucleic acid fragment from a bacterium to another single bacterium via a bacteriophage through the process of adsorption. The bacteriophage attaches to the bacterium and modifies the metabolism and the bacterial chromosome. After the alteration, the bacterium disintegrates and releases the bacteriophage that contains the donor bacterium’s DNA. This inserts the code to the recipient bacterium, and homologous recombination ensues CITATION Kai19 \l 13321 (Kaiser).
Transformation is also another form of homologous recombination where one portion of the DNA from a deceased bacterium is transferred to a healthy recipient bacterium by exchanging a DN...
