‘The School of Athens’ art
The ‘School of Athens’ was a painting by Raphael Sanzio da Urbino, one of the greatest painters during the Renaissance. Raphael was also a great architect. Raphael is also praised for the clarity, ease of composition, and rare touch of human grandeur (Williams 54). The ‘School of Athens’ is one of the finest works of the Italian Renaissance period. The art is preserved to date in the Vatican in Raphael’s Room. The painting is significant because it embodies the disagreement between the western pro-science philosophers and pro-religion philosophers. The picture is a reinvigoration of the ancient ideas on philosophy and religion and the reminiscence of Renaissance art. The art was created for Pope Julius from 1509 to 1511(Reale and Martin, 95). The art reflects the centrality of art in disseminating religious information, and Raphael was one of the many artists who were considered craftsmen.
The ‘School of Athens’ features Plato and Aristotle, given that the Renaissance period marked the reawakening of classical scientific and artistic ideas. In this regard, Raphael’s art possesses various artistic elements, including geometry. The ‘School of Athens’ has triangles, pentagons, circles and squares, and many other shapes, making it a perfect geometric piece of art and exclusive design (Fig.1). The other element of art manifest in the art is the use of artistic decorations in the fresco painting to improve the ‘School of Athens.’ The piece of art was crucial and attractive given that it had an arch, which was is arguably the greatest symbol of ancient Rome (Sightseeing Tours Italy n.p.; Fig.1).
