Improving the levels of innovation and creativity at CHEM-TECH
CHEM-TECH is a reputable medium-sized company producing specialty chemicals for the food industry. They provide synthetic products that improve the flavor, color, texture, and nutritional value of food and beverages. However, the scientists who have been on the front line of this production have left the company leading to high-unfulfilled demand for products and reduced profits. Furthermore, there is low creativity among the employees and a lack of willingness to explore alternative avenues to boost productivity. Some of the employees have been let go after unsuccessful innovation projects in the past.
Recently, external factors such as new biotechnological means of production, and the growing market for natural aroma extracts, natural flavor, alternative sources of protein fats and sugar have significantly affected the operations of CHEM-TECH. There is an increasing realization among the top management that there is an urgent need for the company to adopt measures that will improve innovation and creativity among its employees to maintain a competitive advantage in the diversifying market. This briefing paper intends to highlight the courses of action that CHEM-TECH can take, the advantages and disadvantages, and recommendations on how they can improve the levels of innovation and creativity among their employees.

Pisano (2019) exudes the characteristics that contribute to an innovative environment. CHEM-TECH can be Tolerance to Failure, where instead of firing employees for failed innovations, they can be moved around to departments that best fit their abilities to boost their confidence in risk-taking. Willingness to Experiment will give CHEM-TECH experience and knowledge to make better innovative decisions. Pisano exudes Collaboration among employees as a way to create innovations. CHEM-TECH should encourage Collaboration but maintain individual accountability for an idea. Implementation of the three characteristics will go a long way in improving employee creativity
The creation of a change is climate advantageous because it grows employee engagement, thus boosting productivity; the culture nurtures the sense of community among employees. If CHEM-TECH creates an environment that cultivates innovation, then there will be increased team bonding and Collaboration. Innovative c...
