RE: CONTENT TO BE INCLUDED IN THE COURSEWORK:
I am writing to ask for an inclusion of a relevant and significant topic in the Canadian History into the Ontario grade 10 history program. The Québec separation referendum in 1995 marks a historical event that appears to be an educative and a reminiscent of similar events happening around the world today. The quest for Quebec independence was found on the argument that the Canadian government had been promoting economic development only Toronto, at the expense of other provinces through unequal implementation of numerous policies over forty years. The petitioners, the Québec sovereignty referendum gained their agitation after the fall of failure of both Meech Lake and the Charlottetown Accord. The event is relevant to the contemporary social-economic and socio-political aspect of history today since there are numerous sections from different parts of the world which have either agitated for secession or are currently seeking for separation such as the Brexit case. In as much as the Québec referendum on sovereignty failed narrowly, the event still offers important lessons regarding to the significance of Quebec separatism in the history of Canada and the world at large.
The event fits into the course as it complements the already existing modules such as the French Colonies in Canada, the Civil Rights in Canada and the Constitution of Canada. In other words, the topic is connected to the overall course content and expectations as well as it enlightens students about the cost of separation and the concept of political and economic equality under the spell of unity and integration in Canada and the world today. As a quiet revolution, the pursuit on Quebec sovereignty posted a threat to my family in terms of economic progress as the rigorous campaigns made Canada lose tourists attraction in Quebec. Relatedly, my family security was threatened as the frenzies of the campaigns and the bitterness of the referendum divided families and neighborhoods as well as driving fear across the country as many thought the country would disintegrate
The date for the referendum was set on October, 30th 1995. The separatists were seeking a partial secession where they could form an independent state that would allow exchange of trade, institutions,capital, commuters and labor with Canada. With approximately 99% voter turnout, where the federalist rejected the move by 50.6 percent against the company 49.4 percent of the Separatists. The proposal nearly saw the creation of a new state.
