Belief & Culture: Build Awareness
For this module, your task is to apply what you have learned about the importance of belief & culture in information security management and how to build awareness and proper perceptions to an information security issue of your choice. Overview
Information security has become one of the most significant and exigent issues facing modern healthcare organizations. With all-encompassing utilization of technology and widespread link to the international environment, health care organizations have become more exposed to many and different threats. Although having proper technical controls can offer substantial safeguard against majority of the emerging threats, they are not capable of offering a comprehensive solution on their own. Although the technological methods that are used to protect information may be ideal on their own, most of the losses in information are not the result of faulty technology but rather by faulty human behavior (Schneier, 2008). This is the problem that has been affecting the Computer Physician Order Entry System (CPOE) that is used in a health care facility where I am a volunteer.
Cultural/Contextual Issues
The health care facility where the CPOE system has been used has a team of dedicated security team to ensure that data stored in the CPOE system is safeguarded. Despite the presence of this team and the constant information technology checks that are conducted to ensure that the system is safe, there are still security leaks that lead to the loss or release of patient data to the wrong hands. Within this organization, safeguarding data is seen as a reserve of a few individuals and the management does not involve the employees in this task (Hoepman, & Jacobs, 2007). Even though some organizations realize that employees are critical in ensuring the security of systems within the healthcare organization, there has never been any seriousness in ensuring that such security measures are enforced. When organizations organize training on the security of health care systems, only a few employees attend as most of them do not see where they fit in the security measures issue (Wright, 2007). The main reason why most people might not be ready to attend such training on security measures is because they do not understand the importance of protecting data and certainly most organizations do not insist on compliance on the part of the employees. Apart from this, most organizations do not insist on accountability and as such most employees do not have any motivation to actively take a part in data safeguarding (Hiller, et al. 2012)....
