1 What are the advantages of Microsoft Excel over MATLAB?
Microsoft Excel is widely known and has been around for years. When looking at the advantages of why Microsoft Excel is better than MATLAB, here are some reasons:
1. Friendly Interface: Excel is known for having an interface that is easy to use and understand. This means many people can use it, even if they know little about math or code. Making and changing spreadsheets is simple and takes little time to learn.
2. Data Visualization: Excel has powerful tools for making charts and graphs. It works best for making plain and straightforward visual displays of data, which is why it is the best choice for creating simple charts and graphs (Warner & Meehan, 2001).
3. Excel is almost always available on both Windows and Mac computers. It is easy for many people to choose because it is widely available.
4. Integration with Other Microsoft Office Tools: Word, PowerPoint, and Excel all work well together in Microsoft Office, making it easier to create reports and slideshows (Warner & Meehan, 2001).
What features does MATLAB support that Microsoft Excel does not?
MATLAB is a specialized software setting for mathematical and scientific computing that offers many features and functions that Microsoft Excel does not carry out. Here are some important features that MATLAB has that Excel doesn't:
1. Advanced Mathematical and Scientific Computing: MATLAB is excellent at doing hard scientific and mathematical calculations. It can do symbolic math, numerical analysis, and a lot of other math tasks, which makes it perfect for studying math, engineering, and physics.
2. HLL: MATLAB is not just a spreadsheet program but also a full-fledged high-level computer language that lets users make their functions, scripts, and programs (Ozgur et al., 2021). Excel does not allow you to make these kinds of changes.
Which statistical tests does MATLAB support that Microsoft Excel does not, and under what conditions might they be needed?
There are a lot of statistical tests and research tools in MATLAB that are not in Microsoft Excel. Statistical and mathematical problems that are hard to solve in science, engineering, and data analysis often call for these tests (Wagner & Gillespie, 2019). MATLAB can do the following statistical tests, and the following situations may call for them:
1. An ANOVA (Analysis of Variance): One-Way ANOVA: You can use one-way ANOVA in MATLAB to compare the results of three or more groups. It might require assessing how different things affect a specific development (Kim, 2017).
2. Analysis of Time Series: Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA): Time series data can be used to look at ARIMA models, which are used to make predictions (Ho & Xie, 1998). They are very important in economics, business, and other areas where data changes over time.

The statistical analysis software package I researched was IBM’s SPSS Statistics Minitab. The advantages of Microsoft Excel (n.d.) over SPSS (n.d.) are the ease and use of accessibility of Excel. Excel can also use data and turn it into graphs and charts for visual data representations. Excel can perform quick calculations for smaller data which can be efficient for the user. Excel updates data automatically and SPSS requires command. Excel is a more basic tool for statistical analysis when compared to SPSS.
SPSS has a higher speed and performance than Excel. When working with a large dataset, SPSS can handle the load while Excel cannot. SPSS is specifically a statistic software and Excel is a spreadsheet software. SPSS offers statistical procedures and tools related to analysis, data exploration, and testing, which come with more detailed data reports. SPSS also offers automated reporting options and templates that Excel would require manual creation and customization.
SPSS supports Tukey-Kramer test, Welch’s t-test, and multiway ANOVA. Excel supports several statistical tests, but not as many or as details tests when compared to SPSS. These statistical tests might be needed when analyzing large datasets that have multiple variables and components. These statistical tests give more insight into how the data affects variables, and to determine the relationships with outcomes.

According to Osterberg (2019), the number one advantage of Excel over other software like Stata is its user-friendliness. Therefore, the xlsx file type is something that can be imported into many other statistical software. Microsoft has spent years refining Excel for the basic spreadsheet user. Also noted by Osterberg (2019), Excel has a lot of strong tools built into it that can take it beyond just the basic data and statistics breakdowns.
According to Why Stata (2022), the biggest advantage of Stata is the ability to merge, append, and collect data from multiple sets. Their product is clearly made to handle much larger datasets than is typically used in Microsoft Excel. According to Why Stata (2022), their product also allows programming capabilities through the use of Unicode and Python allowing the user to build data analysis that is truly individualized for their needs.
Stata seems to over many more tests than Microsoft Excel. One of them is a Kruskal-Wallis test. According to Lamuscio (2021), the Kruskal-Wallis test is a non-parametric test that is used when you are comparing data in multiple sets. Lamuscio (2021) compares it to the opposite of ANOVA test which looks at data that follows a normal distribution. The Kruskal-Wallis test is good for data that does not necessarily have a normal distribution.
