Emotional Intelligence (EI) is not only the ability of an individual to identify, show, understand, and manage their emotions, but also the ability to do the same with other people’s emotions (Miao, Humphrey, &Qian, 2016). People who are emotionally intelligent are able to cope with stressful situations because they are conscious of their emotions and those of people around them.
In the workplace, EI is especially important because a lot of times, employees have to interact with each other and with their leaders under stressful, high-pressure situations. As such, it is imperative that employers know and understand the EI of all the employees. This would be integral in some key areas within the organization. For instance, employers would be able to assign responsibilities better if they understand the EI of their employees. According to Sony and Mekoth (2016), employees with high EI are best suited to work in high-pressure roles because they are in touch with emotions and can easily adapt to changes. As such, if employers understand the EI level of employees, they would be able to assign roles based on EI, in addition to other capabilities, to maximize employee productivity. In addition, employers can be able to estimate the intention of employees to leave the organization using EI. As revealed by Miao, Humphrey, and Qian (2016), employees with high EI portray lower intentions to leave and as such, employers can be able to control employees’ turnover rates using EI. Further, employers should know employees’ EI so that they can be able to estimate their level of job satisfaction because Miao, Humphrey, and Qian (2016) posit that high EI translates into high job satisfaction levels.
