Wilbur and Orville Wrights were brothers from the heartland of America who long held the vision of flying in the sky. They settled in their idea by establishing Wright Cycle Company, a bicycle enterprise that they founded in 1892. Despite the countless bicycles that already existed in America during those days, theirs was unique in the sense that it incorporated wings and wheels. In their bicycle shop, Wrights developed the first wind tunnel specifically intended for aeronautical explorations. In it, they experimented numerous model wings to find out how the lift of a wing they built differed with length, width, and the curvature. During this early development stage, Orville quoted in an article, “Wilbur and I could hardly wait morning to come to get something that interested us” (McFarland, 2001).
Using the wind tunnel information that they collected from the newly designed glider in 1902, the Wrights developed a better model whose features included long and slender wings. At the Kitty Hawk in 1902, their model crashed in a dune while on a test. In the following months, they made more that 1200 glides, the longest one measuring 622.5 feet and lasted for only 26seconds.Wright brother developed their bicycle project, eventually turning the world into a small village in 1903 by developing a human-powered flight (Tobin, 2003).
The idea of forming a plane was a long time fascination in the Wright brothers. In 1878, their father, a minister in the Church of the United Brethren in Christ presented them with a flying toy made of cork and bamboo.
