In his text, Hinton depicts Mark as a young lad who has had terrible experiences in his life. For starters, Mark's parents die in a somewhat bizarre drunken fight. Bryon's mom adopts him and unlike Bryon; Mark gravitates towards gang life in his early teenage life. Bryon tries to shape Mark, but he (Mark) is too focused on the status quo he embodies. The author also portrays Mark as a jealous individual who is envious whenever Bryon spends time with Cathy instead of him. Mark in response is absorbed into uncanny drug habits, not facing the full consequences of his actions and consequently even breaking the law. In chapter 10, Mark finally gets to pay for his deeds. In his eyes, Mark feels that Bryon betrayed him by reporting him to the police. He perceives himself as very innocent because he neither uses the drugs nor offers them to M&M. Mark defends himself by reiterating how badly they needed...
