Christians weigh options on the benefits and costs of socialism and capitalism that has re-emerged as a long-standing debate. During the 20th century, a free market proved to be superior in meeting human needs as compared to socialism. According to Kenway et al. (2017), Christians who care about the less fortunate blame capitalism for the existing evils in the society. In most instances, equal opportunity for success in a free community is a critical aspect of overcoming poverty while enhancing expediting economic prosperity. Market-based economies are consistent with Christ’s teachings based on a biblical perspective. The cold war dominated the period between 1945-1990 during the collapse of the USSR. Christians had key responsibilities regarding capitalism and communism based on the Cold War.
The Cold War period resulted in increased distrust of communism among the American Christians. During the conflict, the United States foreign policy focused on the anti-communist ideological approach. Notably, the costs of facilitating the spread of communism would have been costly to Christians and Americans at large. According to Beed and Beed (2014), the United States relied on military interventions of the various communist nations and negotiated solution policies with a core objective of advancing democracy, resulting from the increased threat of autocratic communists. Conversely, Christians perceived that capitalists’ ideals allowed them to adhere to God’s will. As such, every Christ’s follower was accountable for their decisions and actions, unlike the case of communism. Therefore, it is apparent that Christians had vital responsibilities regarding communism and capitalism based on the mandates of the Gospel.
