Introduction
Ernest Hemingway is known as one of the great American writers of the 20th century. A Nobel Prize and Pulitzer Prize winner, Hemingway's short stories and novels are notable for his sparse, economical use of language with deep undercurrents of universal human emotion. Hemingway's "Hills Like White Elephants" represents some of the storied author's most classic choices: set in Spain, concerned with relationship dynamics, simple and devastating in one concise arc. Read the story, take notes, and whatever you do, please do not read summaries of the story on the internet.
Instructions
This week, we will begin our regular weekly discussion boards. Although this will be graded, consider this week a practice to see what my expectations are. Please review the rubric to see more details about how you will be graded.
AFTER YOU HAVE READ AND ANNOTATED THE TEXT:
Answer this discussion prompt:
Hemingway once suggested that his purpose in such a story is to tell the reader as little as possible directly yet to reveal characters' motives and their conflict. How does this principle operate in this story?
Choose a "golden line" – a quotation or key phrase from the text that has special meaning or strikes you as important. What information is Hemingway revealing or concealing in the selected line or phrase?
Rules to follow:
Do not use 1st or 2nd person in your DB post. That means the words "I" or "you" or any variant (me, myself, my, your, yourself, yours) should not appear in your post unless it is part of a quote from the text. This is college-level expository writing, not narrative writing. If you are unfamiliar with the term expository writing, Google is your friend.
Do not have any typos in your DB posts and responses. You have spellcheck, and grammar checkers, and your own brain. It's too easy!
Double check that you have spelled the author's name and the title of the work correctly. I am quite picky about this.
Do not confuse the author with the protagonist (or main character) of the story. If it is a work of fiction, assume they are not the same person.
Include a Works Cited entry at the bottom of your posts to give credit for your quotes or examples.

Hills Like White Elephants
Ernest Hemingway once pointed out that his aim in stories such as Hills Like White Elephants is to tell readers as little as possible directly yet to divulge the motives of the characters as well as their conflict. This principle is evident in the short story Hills Like White Elephants. The main characters in the text are Jig and an American man. As indicated by their conversation, the two are at a crossroads as they are not sure of which direction to take. Jig, who is a woman, and the American man are discussing a simple operation. It is likely that they are talking about whether Jig should abort or should keep the baby. It is quite obvious to readers that the man wants the lady to terminate the pregnancy and abort their unborn child, while the lady remains uncertain ...
