A Co-Cultural Project Outline
Introduction
Racism has been a significant problem in the United States of America (USA) for an extended period. The five primary racial categories in the country are African American, Alaska Native, White American, Asian American, and American Indians. The co-cultural group that the paper focuses on is African American.
Customs, Values, Ideas, Traditions, and Beliefs that Bind Black People in the USA
The most significant thing that has enabled African Americans to overcome the challenges they encounter in the USA is the family reunion and religious beliefs. When these individuals come together, they comfort one another, which is crucial for their endurance and the maintenance of their cultural heritage (DPhil, 2017). Family cohesiveness contributes to the togetherness in the community, where music and prayers give black people hope for a better tomorrow.
How African Americans Interact and Respond to the Dominant White Culture
Whites are the dominant culture in the USA. These individuals were the ones who brought in black people as slaves before independence. However, white and black people have not found a balance even today.
How Black People Perceive Themselves in Relation to the Dominant Culture and Other Co-Cultural Groups
African Americans believe that they are capable of doing things like their white counterparts. As such, they always strive to be the best in what they do. These individuals do not consider themselves as inferior, which has enabled them to have major achievements in the USA. For example, currently, many of them are highly educated, and they work for large organizations.
Are African Americans Feminine, Collectivist, Individualistic, Low Power, High Power, or Masculine
Collectivism has enabled black people to overcome various problems they encounter in the USA as a group. Highly influential individuals like Martin Luther King helped these individuals to realize that togetherness is essential when dealing with issues that affect members of this minority group as a whole (Connolly, 2015). As such, despite their low population, black people succeed in many things since they support one another.
Black People Use Jargon and In-Group Phrases and Words
In particular, African Americans residing in the USA come from different parts of Africa. For this reason, they are subdivided into distinctive tribes. For instance, those who come from Nigeria speaks a different language from those who originate from Kenya. On that note, these individuals use jargon or words that cannot be understood by other communities. However, when in the USA, they usually use the universal language of English.
How Nonverbal Communication, Including Appearance, Reflect African American Co-Cultural Identity
The physical appearance of African Americans reflects their cultural identity. For instance, their skin color is black, and they...
