The history of the factory is a history of cognitive dissonance. If you are unfamiliar with that term, Yuval Harari explains it best:
Just as when two clashing musical notes played together force a piece of music forward, so discord in our thoughts, ideas and values compel us to think, reevaluate and criticize. Consistency is the playground of dull minds. If tensions, conflicts and irresolvable dilemmas are the spice of every culture, a human being who belongs to any particular culture must hold contradictory beliefs and be riven by incompatible values. It’s such an essential feature of any culture that it even has a name: cognitive dissonance. Cognitive dissonance is often considered a failure of the human psyche. In fact, it is a vital asset. Had people been unable to hold contradictory beliefs and values, it would probably have been impossible to establish and maintain any human culture.
Embodied in the history of the factory—or in the factory today—will be sets of contradictions. The author of the book Behemoth, for example, says in the introduction that the factory was both an “incandescent symbol of both human ambition and achievement, but also suffering. Time and again, it served as a measuring rod for attitudes toward work, consumption, and power, a physical embodiment of dreams and nightmares about the future.” Achievement and suffering; dreams and nightmares. These are just a few of the contradictions that make the factory interesting.

Go back and re-read chapters 1 and 2 of Behemoth and answer this question: in your opinion, what “tensions, conflicts and irresolvable dilemmas” are at the heart of the early history of the factory? In other words, pinpoint the cognitive dissonance in the early history of the factory as you see it, and then explain why you see it that way.
