Revolutionary Vision: Popular Democracy or Elite Plutocracy?
A revolution will always change the norms of society and replace them with dynamic and new ways to operate. The American society has always boosted of a revolution and numerous revolutions occurred in the seventeenth and eighteenth century to change the old order. However, it begs the question whether the revolutions developed popular democracy or a domination of the wealthy elites. The books The White Man's Burden, by Winthrop D. Jordan, and Howard Zinn, “Voices of a People's History” are discussed in this paper so as to understand revolutionary vision.
Racism has dominated the talks for most generations in America; the major revolution was against racism and slavery where blacks were treated discriminately. The revolution by Martin Luther King delivered many Black Americans from the bondages and gave a new lease of life to them. However, democracy would be described as where majority have their way while minority has their say. Is this a way for the elite to rule and dominate (Plutocracy)? According to Jordan, (1974), Negroes were referred to as beasts. The whites used the Negroes for personal gains i.e. to till and work in the plantations, and despite considering them as men they still exploited their natural physical nature.
Jordan gives an account of the way the African man was classified not to be a man and hence using and abusing him as animals. They were treated differently because of their skin color and physical stature. He states “For Europeans in general, the Negro’s blackness afforded a certain happiness.
