Selecting teaching (instructional) strategies and learning experiences to help learners achieve the curriculum's outcomes (both organizational and context-specific objectives) is a very important step in the curriculum development process. The learning strategies must be designed to diminish the theory to practice gap. The objectives and weighted learning experiences are usually depicted in a syllabus or curriculum outline.
Action Steps to Develop Teaching/Learning Strategies:
Select learning experiences to achieve the established objectives (outcomes)
Ensure the strategies are learner centered, not teacher centered
Plan learning activities (must relate each objective to learning experiences)
Provide multiple opportunities for the learner to gain knowledge
Break down learning activities by subject, topic, skills, module, etc.
Place the activities in a logical order to build knowledge gradually
Establish incremental time frames for learning activities (15 minutes, 60 minutes, weekly, etc.).
Balance the time frames over the length of the program to give students multiple opportunities to accomplish the activities. Remember to think learner centered curriculum and adult learning theory.
Determine what constitutes acceptable evidence of competency.
Provide multiple opportunities for the learner to be able to achieve the intended competency (desired result or level of learning)
Using the Backward Design Model, identify specific teaching and learning strategies for your curriculum. In this assignment, you must identify three topics or skills in your curriculum, identify the instructional strategies and learning experiences you will use to give the learners the opportunity to learn, determine the incremental times needed (lecture and lab hours) for the learning experience, and specify the evaluation method you will use to assess learning. Again, think learner centered curriculum. You might want to refer to Bloom's Taxonomy for some ideas.
Work with your CDT on Group Page to achieve a consensus throughout this assignment (use the convenient CDT Group link on the Course Menu (on your left).
