A journal article by Johansen, 2012, highlights the concept of conflict management for leaders in the nursing sector. The author asserts that an efficient conflict management within and healthcare unit leads to improved staff morale, staff satisfactions, patient safety and improved general service delivery. Since a nursing environment is prone to different kind of conflicts, managers have a duty to approach such situations thoroughly to put things in control. Concisely, the article explains the need for conflict resolutions and the strategies to combat conflicts in a health care setting.
The author points out three concrete facts about conflict management strategies in nursing. First, for a unit to have an effective resolution and management conflict, all the area of disagreement should push for high level of understanding and clear communication among the staffs (Johansen, 2012). Second, managers in a nursing facility have a duty to evaluate on how nurses are handling instances of conflicts to determine the sources of conflicts and be able to develop conflict management strategies and training that would be useful in assisting the nurses in handling incidences of conflicts. Lastly, the most common type of conflict in a health care unit is interpersonal conflicts because nurses are more likely to interfere or frustrates each other’s’ of achieving their goals.
In addition, the author went ahead and highlighted five conflict resolutions strategies, which a nurse manager can employ to help resolve conflict between nurses. First, engaging in dialogue technique allows a nurse leader to participate in a dialogue between conflicting parties to address the root cause of the problem in a bid to solve it (Kelly & Tazbir, 2013). Second, engaging in coaching is a preventive oriented technique, whereby the nurse manager coaches the nursing staff on ways of avoiding and absorbing interpersonal conflicts to minimize extension of conflicts. Third, Identification of potential conflicts is another appropriate strategy used to detect likelihood occurrence of conflicts in areas that are prone to conflicts or where conflicts are inevitable based on experience (Johansen, 2012).
