Comfort care is a vital part of health care at one’s end of life. Its main goals are to relieve suffering while improving the quality of life. This type of care is also known as palliative care. At the end of life, each person’s dying story is different. End of life care is often used to describe the care and support given by medical practitioners at a near-death stage. Certain medication like morphine is increased to relieve a dying person’s pain (National Institute on Aging, 2020). Morphine is a strong opiate drug that is used to reduce pain. Successfully reducing pain can provide much needed comfort to the dying person and his\her family members.
This three day two hour classes will be developed to increase awareness of nurses who work with aging people who suffer from cardiovascular diseases, AIDS, Cancer and Diabetes. The palliative care classes will be sponsored by the World Health Organization and taught at Banner Thunderman Medical Centre (BTMC) in Glendale, Arizona. The World Health Organization was first established in 1948 by the United Nations member states. WHO is the global leading health organization. Its aim is to direct and coordinate authority on international healthcare services. Since palliative care falls under improving the global health standards, the World Health Organization aims to educating nurses on the right way to administer morphine at end of life. Other WHO responsibilities include: Establishing technical and administrative services, eradicating diseases, promoting scientific and professional cooperation among international groups and proposing international health policies. WHO’s work on palliative care focuses on the following: First and foremost, it aims to integrate palliative care into disease control and health system plans on a global scale (Who.int, 2020). Secondly, establish guidelines for palliative care across all levels of care. Thirdly, support member countries by improving their access to palliative care medicine through an integrated delivery and supply system. Fourthly, provide children with palliative care. Fifthly, monitor global palliative care and identify any progress made. Sixthly, building a palliative care system that is effective in all countries.
Needs Assessment
According to a survey done by the World Health Organization, approximately 40 million people globally need palliative care. The survey goes on to state that of the 40 million, 78% belong to low or middle class countries while 22% belong to high-income countries like the United States of America. Additionally, WHO also highlighted the main barriers preventing people from accessing palliative care. These are: Firstly, most national and international health policies do not include palliative care. Secondly, the training on palliative care is more often than not limited or hypothetical (Who.int, 2020). Last but not least, access to palliative care medicine is often inadequate. Based on the above information, the World Health Organization determined that: Everyone, irrespective of age, race and income level should have access to quality health services including palliative care.
