Assessment Description
The first step of the evidence-based practice process is to evaluate a nursing practice environment to identify a nursing problem in the clinical area. When a nursing problem is discovered, the nurse researcher develops a clinical guiding question to address that nursing practice problem.
For this assignment, you will create a clinical guiding question know as a PICOT question. The PICOT question must be relevant to a nursing practice problem. To support your PICOT question, identify six supporting peer-reviewed research articles, as indicated below. The PICOT question and six peer-reviewed research articles you choose will be utilized for subsequent assignments.
Use the "Literature Evaluation Table" to complete this assignment.
Select a nursing practice problem of interest to use as the focus of your research. Start with the patient population and identify a clinical problem or issue that arises from the patient population. In 200–250 words, provide a summary of the clinical issue.
Following the PICOT format, write a PICOT question in your selected nursing practice problem area of interest. The PICOT question should be applicable to your proposed capstone project (the project students must complete during their final course in the RN-BSN program of study).
The PICOT question will provide a framework for your capstone project.
Conduct a literature search to locate six research articles focused on your selected nursing practice problem of interest. This literature search should include three quantitative and three qualitative peer-reviewed research articles to support your nursing practice problem.
Note: To assist in your search, remove the words qualitative and quantitative and include words that narrow or broaden your main topic. For example: Search for diabetes and pediatric and dialysis. To determine what research design was used in the articles the search produced, review the abstract and the methods section of the article. The author will provide a description of data collection using qualitative or quantitative methods. Systematic Reviews, Literature Reviews, and Metanalysis articles are good resources and provide a strong level of evidence but are not considered primary research articles. Therefore, they should not be included in this assignment.
While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

The period between conception and a year following the birth can be vital to the mental health of a woman. Perinatal depression is a collective term used in reference to stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms that women can experience right from conception, through birth, and twelve months after birth. Multiple factors can contribute to perinatal depression, including infants born with disabilities, terminations, stillbirths, and miscarriages, among others. The challenge of perinatal depression is serious and needs lasting interventions. In the US, 1 in every 5 to 8 postpartum women and 1 in every 7 to 10 pregnant women develop depressive symptoms, according to Baggett et al. (2021). In population terms, that number implies that more than half a million US women are subject to perinatal depression annually. The prevalent data marks 11.5% as the mean depression rate in the US during the perinatal period, according to Diebold et al. (2020). The number of women experiencing some kind of depression during pregnancy and a year after giving birth keeps increasing. While perinatal depression has advanced as a public health issue, little has been done to intervene in the public health issue. Partly, the challenge stems from multiple debates about the ideal interventions in such a period. Pharmacological interventions have been considered for women experiencing some depressive episodes. However, their applications have been contested with concerns such as overdose and possibilities of harming the health of the babies considered. To that extent, there have been suggestions for instilling non-pharmacological interventions. Such a dilemma has led to questions on the best interventions.

Diebold et al. (2020) is the first qualitative study with an exceeding relevance to the PICOT question. The problem that the study explores is managing the increasing cases of perinatal depression. The researchers base their inputs on the understanding that public health stakeholders are stuck in the need to address depression through ineffective conventional approaches. As more time is spent on those approaches, more patients keep experiencing instances of depression and anxiety through the perinatal periods. Hence, the purpose of the study is to explore the appropriateness of group intervention in the management of perinatal depression. Group intervention is an approach geared toward developing interventions for perinatal depression with little emphasis on pharmacological or professional inputs. In a group intervention, the patients partake in extensive social gatherings and sharing in which paraprofessionals lead them.
