Various studies have associated smoking with several health effects. Some of these effects include respiratory diseases such as lung cancer, cardiovascular effects, erectile dysfunction, among others (Kovac, Labbate, Ramasamy, Tang, & Lipshultz, 2015). It is estimated that 480,000 deaths occur every year as a result of smoking (CDC, 2019). Though secondhand smoke has been associated with negative health consequences, smokers still smoke in the presence of other people. The temporary effects of secondhand smoke include headache and breathing problems, while the long-term effects include cancer and heart disease (Frazer et al., 2016). Many people think that smoking is not associated with environmental pollution. However, this kind of thinking is wrong (truth initiative, 2018). Smoking releases toxic air pollutants that cause environmental pollution. The toxic chemicals in the cigarette butts seep into the soil and water bodies leading to soil and water pollution, respectively (Novotny et al., 2015). In light of the discussed effects of smoking, it is evidently important to ban smoking in public spaces (Garcia-Esquinas et al., 2018).
