The ALF caters to residents who have a disability or a condition that make it difficult to care for themselves. The Sunrise ALF caters to senior citizens. These individuals are at risk of contracting diseases due in part to their advanced age. There is thus a need to educate them on healthy eating habits and their nutrition. The need for this program was identified by Ann Creech, the Activities and volunteer coordinator. The need was identified by noting the prevalence of health conditions whose causes could be directly attributable to poor nutrition. It, therefore, made sense to create a program to educate the residents.
The number of US citizens in the US above 65 stands at 46.2 million. This represents 14.5% of the general population. However, this number is expected to double in the coming decades up to 2060.
