Scholarly Writing
Scholarly writing is one of the most important elements in the development of student mastery of course content, style, and ethicality in academics. Several factors are used to determine the eligibility of a scholarly article including its tone, grammar, clarity, support, and coherence. One of the main ways to ensure that an article meets the required professional standards is peer review which refers to the scrutiny of the professed plans, actions, and ideas to uphold the image, integrity, and knowledge of the respective profession (Doncliff, 2016). Scholarly wring is a significant component of academic research, which makes it a must-have skill for students in any field. Developing great writing skills requires keen dedication to the adherence to academic and professional rules as a way to ensure quality delivery and approval by the respective subject area. Analyzing an article’s adherence to scholarly writing entails the analysis of its style and the extent of adoption of the aforementioned qualities.
The Overall Writing Style in the Selected Articles
Writing style refers to the method of expression used by a researcher to outline the contents of their discipline and subject area as seen in their tone, explicitness, and word choice (Hartley, 2008). One of the aspects that characterize the papers is their clarity, organization, and arrangement of ideas as stated in the abstracts. The articles articulate their objectives and boundaries of the research and follow the sequence of thought in organizing the paper. They reinforce the organization by including subtitles and paragraphs as it creates the impression of order and sequence of ideas thus enhancing readability (Walker, 2003). Two of the articles: (Orlando, 2013 and Brach, 1990) also observe an official tone relying on the third person in the expression of the study findings. Comeaux and Martin (2018), however, use the first-person plural to their involvement in the research. Using the first-person does not mean that the article is informal but is indicative of ownership of ideas, the adoption of an action-based research method, or assuming a participant-observer role (Doncliff, 2016). The papers are well organized, stick to the flow of thought in the abstract, and maintain an official tone throughout the text.
Comparing the Journal Articles to Other Sources
One factor that distinguishes the journal articles is that each of the authors are university affiliates pooling Pepperdine and West Virginia Universities and the University of California. Magazines do not have to be published by academic faculties, which usually require rigorous review. All the articles are also reliant on empirical evidence from prior or participating in research, which is not a necessity in writing some book genres like fantasy that solely relies on the creativity of the author. The articles by Brach (1990), and Comeaux and Martin (2018) include a methodology section where the authors describe the process of arriving at the studies’ findings. Magazines, on the other hand, usually contain feature stores and author opinions instead of supporting evidence. This is because they do not go through the ...
