Technological advancements have not only brought new and faster ways of printing books in the publishing industry but also transformed the way we interact with books. Majority of books come in either of the two forms; the printed form or the digital form. Even books written decades ago also have their digital forms. Digital books lovers can now choose their favorite books from a plethora of digital libraries and repositories – both classic and contemporary books. In recent years, there has been a proliferation of digital books and several debates have ensued on whether the eBooks are gradually becoming the preferred method of readership. EBooks have their advantages over the printed books as well as disadvantages. However, some readers have remained adamant to the transition from the printed books to eBooks. They too have their own reasons as to why they prefer the paper books over the eBooks. The choice between an eBook and printed book stem to the readers preference.
Differences between eBooks and Printed books
The difference between eBooks and printed books is largely based on the form in which the two forms of books are presented to a reader. A weighty argument for eBooks is their remarkable portability compared to printed books. For instance, when travelling, one will need to select the books they are going to carry with them while you can carry hundreds of them in an eBook reader. EBooks readers are relatively light in weight and the only limitation to the number of books you can store in a single device is your storage capacity. Majority of those who prefer eBooks often say that the devices take a lot of weight off their shoulders (theguardian.com).
Another difference that makes eBooks to be preferred is the level of flexibility that the reader enjoys with an eBook. Compared to a printed book, which is considered rigid, a reader can be able to manipulate aspects of the book that would otherwise not be possible on a printed book. For instance, the reader can change the size of the fonts to one is comfortable with. Other aspects that would change the experience of a reader with the book such a line spacing and adjustment of section breaks, and text reflow are also changeable. One cannot manipulate the contents of a printed book to match their preferences. This makes the eBooks quite popular.
An eBook edition of a particular book is easily and quickly accessible especially in online stores. With a printed book, one would need to wait until the book is delivered while an eBook’s delivery is almost instantaneous from the time of purchase (Mellon). This makes the eBooks very convenient where time is concerned. EBooks are a revolutionary way to publish a book without incurring the costs of print production. They are also cheaper as to produce compared to the printed version. This translates cheaper charges for the book to the consumer. Majority of eBook users often cite these reasons.
EBooks unlike printed books are regarded as environmental friendly. If there is a high demand for printed books, this means that there are also a high number of trees to be cut in order to produce the books. EBooks are different as the publisher will only need to make a c...
