People can develop a set of moral ethics, which become part of their own action through intuition, their experiences, and that of others as well as their own actions. The Army plays a vital role for such standards to develop in Soldiers. Leaders, educators, and trainers aid soldiers in instilling institutional values. Furthermore, the Army gives Soldiers clear codes, such as the Law of Land Warfare, the Geneva Convention and the U.S. Soldiers Creed (Barness & Leavitt, 2010). This essay compares moral disengagement on rape-supportive attitudes in college males. It seeks to illustrate the relationship between low moral judgement and strong attitudes towards moral disengagement such as rape supportive attitudes.
Following an ethical framework gives and provides a sense of self-worth and satisfaction and violation of these standards gives a feeling of guilt. Many people follow the ethical frameworks to select their ethical behaviors even in situations where doing the right thing puts the person at risk and doing the wrong thing is beneficial. However, sometimes people with high regards for codes and stringent ethical standards will by choice disengage these ethical frameworks.
Ethical disengagement is avoiding using the ethical framework in a situation using four different rationalizing techniques. Firstly, by reconstruing the conduct. Secondly is obscuring personal responsibility. Thirdly, misrepresenting the negative consequences of one’s deed and finally vilifying those that are maltreated by devaluing and blaming them (Barness & Leavitt, 2010).
Disengagement takes place through various psychological processes that involve restructuring the situation (Bolgiano & Patterson, 2012). An empirical research done on fraternity males in colleges concluded that they have a subjective definition of masculinity that involves sexual conquest, dominance, and control of women and by in large dehumanizes how women are viewed (Carroll, 2009). Fraternity member in colleges often use euphemisms when referring to pledges and also ‘little sisters’ to refer to subservient females that they aggress.
