Value: 10%
Due – by 6:00 pm
Learning Objectives

• Use vocabulary accurately and describe at least one perceptual error in your own words by way of an example
• Organize ideas into a clear and readable discussion
• Apply rules and mechanics of writing to present ideas
The assignment - Instructions
This is the first of two short (2 page, double spaced) written assignments that asks you to think about theory applied to ordinary experience. Draw on your personal experience in a professional setting for this assignment; compare your experience with a theory presented in the textbook. This intellectual thinking develops a professional skill called reflective practice. Reflective writing is a formal and academic form of learning – albeit much different than memorization or writing a paper based on expert ideas.
To start this assignment, think of an example from your experience of your (human) perception-in-action; and, note at least one common error of perception.
Marks: Before you begin review the assignment marking guide.
Organization of this assignment
Introduce the topic of this brief and define key terms such as perception and perceptual errors.
Explain how perception is helpful when it is accurate (true) – such as short cuts, quick assessment situations.
Give an example from personal experience. Describe a situation (1 paragraph) in which you observed others’ behaviour - or - in which you are the key player. What is the behaviour? Did a misunderstanding or conflict arise due to differences in perception or a perceptual error?
Given that perception is unique to each person, explain the differences you observe in hindsight of the situation; relate these to attribution theory and perception.
Conclude the inquiry with a reflective or insightful connection to the concept. What have you learned? What new idea has come to you by way of this thoughtful inquiry into theory and practice?

Stereotyping is one common perception in the workplace and personal life. Description of theory or concept
Stereotypes arise when we judge people based on our perceptions about certain groups, placing the people in categories and observable information to assign traits. Perceptions can be helpful when then people can make meaningful interpretations and sense of a phenomenon. This is especially when evaluating situations in the workplace where there is no time for thorough assessment. However, using accurate and timely information is critical to improving accuracy.
Example from personal experience
I have worked with a colleague who was disabled and walking in clutches, and despite being hired, was placed in probation longer than expected and given negative reviews. The colleague further performed well in the IT Department, but it is only when the former supervisor left that he was finally employed permanently. Before this, the supervisor would be on his case most times, sometimes questioning is abilities, but also failing to address conflict...
