Sexual harassment cases are on the rise in companies today. The repercussions that emanate from such cases often ruin relationships in companies and eventually companies themselves. It is thus crucial that every employee is well aware of the seriousness of the issue at hand and is willing to be an active participant towards the goal of avoiding harassment in communication.
* What encompasses sexual harassment?
One of the ways in which companies fail to avoid sexual harassment is by using vague definitions of sexual harassment. Wall (1991) notes that even though the many definitions of sexual harassment are crucial, they fail to include interpersonal features. These have to be clearly indicated to help employees determine or see the clear demarcations of sexual harassment.
The definition has to be clear and to the point.
* When communication becomes sexual harassment.
Employees need to be aware of the instances when their communication could be interpreted as sexual harassment. People have to be careful with what they say and to whom they direct certain statements.
All the subtle forms of sexual harassment have to be covered. Lower-stake comments and behaviors have to be demystified since many of them could easily escalate to serious harassment.
* What tone should the company adopt?
The company’s tone should be direct when it comes to matters of sexual harassment. There should be no misunderstanding or ambiguity regarding the position of the company on sexual harassment.
