The movie The Name of the Rose is based from a novel written by Umberto Eco, an Italian semiotician. One of the main defining feature of the movie is its setting, which is based in the medieval setting. Historically, those were the times when religious fanaticism – such as the Inquisition – was very prevalent, and these were one of the main themes of the movie but is only on the background (setting and plot). However, what makes it more interesting is the focus in William’s journey to uncover the truth behind all the killings in the monastery. For one, this piques my interest because despite being a friar, William exhibited the characteristic of curiosity, determination, and focus on the hard facts rather than just pigeonholing the killing as happening because of “God’s will” of the work of the devil, as seen from other monks in the movie. Perhaps, the other thing that piqued my interest the most is that the movie showed another historical fact which is the early beginnings of theological disputations and the immense stockpile of knowledge that the church has during the middle Ages. Historically, the monasteries contain most of the books published, and publishes most of the books during the middle Ages.
