State the title of each movie and summarize what each is about. Why did you select these two movies? How are they related to leadership?
Paradise Road (1997)
Paradise Road is a movie that was written and directed by Bruce Beresford. This film tells the story of a group of women who were taken and held prisoner by the Japanese confinement camp during World War 2. It is a story of courage and persistent of a group of women who did not despair or give up, but still had a hope of freedom and a better tomorrow. The movie is set in 1942 during the Second World War. The women went through a lot of tribulations, but they found something that kept them going and renewed their faith and belief. Through music, they were able to revive their already downed spirits. Even though they were presented with the easy way out of becoming prostitutes, they never wavered, and eventually, their resilience paid off when the war came to an end, and they were released. Through the leadership of Adrienne Pargiter, the women found hope in their music. According to Holden (1997), their singing was influential to the point of softening the hearts of the vicious captors.
Remember the Titans (2000)
Remember the Titans is a film that was mainly about racial harmony in whichever aspect of life. It uses sports to mirror this harmony and juxtaposes the victories over racism with those in sports. The film is based on two football coaches, Coach Boone (black) and Coach Yoast (white). Coach Yoast is the immediate former football coach but is asked to be an assistant to Coach Boone, a black coach. The setting of this film is the 1970s, and during this time, the racial rift between the blacks and whites was bigger. However, as the movie goes on, the racial division in the football team diminishes. In one instance in the film, a white player who had initially refused to play with his black teammates asks to be left alone with his black brother. Boone as the coach knew that the team needed to be one for it to make any progress and in many instances, he indirectly forces the black and white football teammates to know and be around each other. This is a movie that reinforces the idea that sports has played a bigger role in bridging the gap between the whites and blacks. According to Scott (2000), there is overwhelming evidence that America's struggle to bridge the racial gap comes from sports.
These two movies outline some of the key issues in leadership, and hence the reason for their selection. To be a good leader, one has to have a certain level of endurance as well as foresight. Both movies exhibit these qualities in great detail, and show how persistent leaders eventually win.
