Elements of Leadership in the Movie Saving Private Ryan

Movie Review Instructions:

Start with these questions that each person needs to answer.

Summary of the scene (this can be removed before we submit our final work, but may help facilitate or recall the scene for the purpose of conversation).

Which elements of leadership are displayed? Which are not?

What lessons can be drawn from the characters and situations in the film (as related to course content)?

How can those lessons be applied in the future?

Within each of these three questions, we can apply the other questions and areas of emphasis outlined in the Google doc. Each person responsible for a section should be able to answer the question, and we can color code the person who primarily answers/begins the conversation of the question in one color and everyone can reply or provide additions in another color.

Use your lesson and lesson 1 as the primary tool for analysis of your section, but use other lessons as necessary to answer the main questions. If anyone has any objections or wants to do a different section, speak up. If not, start reviewing your scenes and outlining your analysis. I think we should each follow a similar outline for our scenes so the Wiki flows.

Summary of the Scene
The scene follows the team's actions as they exchange gunfire with the Germans, and one of them, Caparzo, gets shot by a German sniper. The team is pinned down until one of them takes the sniper down. They proceed with their mission in search of Private Ryan and get involved in another shoot-out. They soon realize they have found the wrong Private Ryan when they eventually contact a different soldier with the same name. They find shelter in a church as they wait for dawn so they can proceed with their mission. It is clear in the scene that the team, including their leader, is affected by the death of their teammate, and their morale is down. There are some elements of resentfulness because the team did not lose Caparzo to save many lives; they lost him to save one man.
Leadership Elements
Captain Miller asserts himself as a leader who leads from the front. He takes on a mission that he does not agree with and leads his men from the front by demonstrating courage and commitment, which is why they are willing to fight alongside him even though they are also uncomfortable risking their lives to save one man. By leading from the front, he demonstrates courage and commitment, which, according to Braden et al. (2005, 26), involves acting against one’s and other’s short-term interests to pursue the assigned mission.
Captain Miller's ability to delegate is another leadership quality evident in the scene. He delegates roles to members of his unit when they arrive at the French village, and such delegation allows him to control the environment (Waddell 1994, 36). For instance, he instructs Corporal Upham to stay with Sergeant Horvath while the rest of the team moves into the village. Also, he listens to his followers, which is one of the elements of a servant leader (Spears 2010, 10). For example, when taking shelter at a church, he listens to Corporal Upham and allows him room to explain his views about his leadership.
