The Ten Commandments in the movie: Shawshank Redemption
Shawshank Redemption is a very inspiring movie about hope and perseverance. Much like the ten commandments of the bible, the movie sets a feeling of struggle in living amongst a society with people who are undergoing their own issues in their life journeys. This pain and struggle are all part of achieving an inner blessing and guidance that can never be taken from us. The ten commandments provide an archetype of the purity that everyone must strive to achieve, and so, breaking these commandments pulls us away from the light and positivity of God. In the movie, the setting and story provide instances where we can see the rule of the ten commandments being broken. With the scenes that are artistically made, these instances provide the audience with insights and epiphanies that are beneficial in their journey to become a better person.
The one who is seen as authority is actually the one who has broken the most from the ten commandments. The jail warden is the one who is seen be society as the good, yet in reality, he is the most sinful.
The 1st commandment “I am the Lord thy God and thou shalt not have other gods before me” Is broken by the jail warden. In the movie, we can see him using his scripture art piece in order to hide his hidden vault that contains stolen money. In a sense, he was worshipping money instead of God.
