Sexuality is one part that is of great importance to the life of a human being. Individuals with intellectual disabilities have the similar thoughts and desires about sex just like all other persons. Although the understanding of sexuality may differ from one person to the other, it is a process that develops slowly from one stage to the other (Healy et al.,2009). A combination of self-respect and a healthy self-esteem are the factors that build up strong sexuality characters. For the relationship of intellectually disabled persons to be successful, they may need additional support from their partners to express their sexuality, find out more about sexuality and even accessing sexual health services. Just like all other individuals, they would like to get married and start families of their own without being limited. At no particular time in life should their rights to sexuality, marriage, and reproduction be limited because their intellectual disability doesn’t make them any less of human beings.
2) After a full semester of this, has your perspective changed in any way? How so? Are you willing to do something to modify the world? What?
Discriminating people with disabilities by denying them jobs, education and other essential needs do not improve the situation it worsens it even makes them feel more inferior because no one fights for their rights (Cuskelly & Gilmore 2007). Because the society has a perspective that people with disabilities are weak and can only survive by being assisted by others, I will work tirelessly to change their minds. I would come up with programs that would involve the participation of the disabled organize projects that would help them raise money for their needs to ensure that they necessarily do not need to survive on employment.
