The 1990 documentary Paris is Burning covers Latino gay, transgender, and African American life in New York, as seen in the 1980s. The documentary basically contains loads of ballroom activities, as witnessed among the aforementioned groups. Drag queens and ballroom cultures were not as eccentric during the 1980s. They mirrored the cultural direction in which the country was taking. Hence, as seen in the documentary, the house members participate in competitions to see whose body can perform in the most real way, but not standard in the 1980s society.
