1st paragraph = provide an overview of your response to the question and list what film or films you’ve chosen to analyze in relation to the question. 2nd paragraph = analyze a specific theme, aspect, or sequence from within the film or films in relation to the question. Use as much specific detail from the film as possible to give substance to your analysis. 3rd paragraph = as 2nd paragraph, except with a different theme, aspect, or sequence that helps build on your argument. 4th paragraph = reiterate your overall argument from the first paragraph, but incorporate the insights you’ve gained through the close analysis in paragraphs 2-3.
1. Both Meshes of the Afternoon and Un Chien Andalou (Andalousean Dog) have been described as “Surrealist” films. First, what does it mean to call these films “Surrealist”? Second, describe what particular qualities they possess that might lead them to be considered as such. Finally, describe the most significant differences between these films.
2. Depictions of the naked human body have played a major role in some of the films we've discussed. Choose two films we've seen and compare and contrast them in terms of what they show, how they show it, and the purpose of this depiction, as you understand it. There is a long tradition of representing nude bodies within the history of painting and sculpture. In what ways do these films continue or depart from this prior tradition?

Surrealist films leave the audience with images that are not only shocking but also lodge into the audience psyche depriving them of the easy legible narrative. This part of the easy is going to look at surrealist films based on the movies Meshes of the Afternoon and Un Chien Andalou. Both Meshes of the afternoon and Un Chien Andalou are observed as surrealist films because they have a similar method of displaying dreamlike images and situations. In Meshes of the Afternoon, there is the element of repeating scenes, moving objects and cinematographic activities that aid in constructing a dreamlike mood for the audience. It begins with a woman exploring her home then dozes off in a chair and it ends with a man walking in to find the woman dead. The dreams include her chasing a figure with flowers; she runs up and down the stairs and then looks out the window at the figure being chased by a copy of another woman. There is a repetition of this sequence up to three times and there is exhibition of three women in the house who are aware of each other presence. This mimics how people have same repeatedly dream and the surreal effect is created. Un Chien Andalou is a combination of seeped in insanity, aggression, fear, and obsession. There is a mix of subconscious longing, hatred, and sexual anxiety to create a dream like viewing experience. Un Chien Andalou surrealism also emerges when they make the connection to the moon and cloud. The two separate shots are separated by space and time.
