Meshes Of The Afternoon And Un Chien Andalou
There are two questions to answer in a 4 paragraph (minimum) response for EACH.
These questions will require you to analyze a specific film or films we’ve seen in class in terms of the theoretical ideas we discussed. You should choose specific scenes and use the film terminology we discussed to strengthen your analysis. The structure of your response is up to you, but an generic structure that is widely applicable is as follows:
1st paragraph = provide an overview of your response to the question and list what film or films you’ve chosen to analyze in relation to the question. 2nd paragraph = analyze a specific theme, aspect, or sequence from within the film or films in relation to the question. Use as much specific detail from the film as possible to give substance to your analysis. 3rd paragraph = as 2nd paragraph, except with a different theme, aspect, or sequence that helps build on your argument. 4th paragraph = reiterate your overall argument from the first paragraph, but incorporate the insights you’ve gained through the close analysis in paragraphs 2-3.
1. Both Meshes of the Afternoon and Un Chien Andalou (Andalousean Dog) have been described as “Surrealist” films. First, what does it mean to call these films “Surrealist”? Second, describe what particular qualities they possess that might lead them to be considered as such. Finally, describe the most significant differences between these films.
2. Depictions of the naked human body have played a major role in some of the films we've discussed. Choose two films we've seen and compare and contrast them in terms of what they show, how they show it, and the purpose of this depiction, as you understand it. There is a long tradition of representing nude bodies within the history of painting and sculpture. In what ways do these films continue or depart from this prior tradition?
