The Square
The year of 2011, marked a series of revolutions in the Middle East starting from Tunisia which peacefully removed their decades-old dictatorship and earned democracy. The successful revolution in Tunisia sparked revolutions in other parts of the region and revived the buried urge of democracy in the people of the region (Fisher). Soon the demands of democratic reforms migrated themselves into the neighboring Egypt where a revolution was carried out by the young generation having the sole aim to remove the dictatorship of Hosni Mubarak. The revolution had already gained much needed international attention when the filmmaker Jehane Noujaim landed in Egypt (Fisher). The filmmaker embedded herself with the revolutionaries and documented the history as it took place. The powerful result was in the form of a documentary, “The Square” and already won an Academy Award, an Oscar, and is being premiered at several platforms. The documentary tracks the turbulent political structure of the country, the struggle of people, their resolve, and the fears of the crackdown by the dictator’s military and the following Islamist Government (Fisher). The film also shares the conflicts between the revolutionaries themselves, the role of revolutionary leaders, the social communities, and finally, the role played by the Muslim Brotherhood in securing a decisive position in the Egyptian politics.
For most of the experts, the "Arab Spring" for most of the Middle Eastern countries can be regarded as, “Arab Autumn” (Fisher). The turmoil in the countries like Libya, Syria, and Iraq, the rise of terrorist organizations like ISIS, and reinforcement of the terror campaigns in the stable countries like the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are all attributed this democratic movement. The polarization and division of the Middle Eastern countries in terms of pro-democratic and pro-Islamic has been portrayed by the filmmaker (Scott). The revolutionaries which disposed the dictator from the power Tahrir Square were unable to secure positions or power in the new regime or political structure of the country (Scott). It created a gap which was exploited by the Muslim Brotherhood and they were able to form a government which was opposed by the West, Egyptians themselves, and the military as well (Scott).
