The differences of class and tensions between the rich and the poor would play out in the open as the communist ideologies began to find surface amongst members of the community. The communist struggles to spread its political, social, and economic principles and doctrines found its way to the film industry. One of the films documenting or displaying the communist revolution and struggles to bring the nation under the socialist ideologies is the 1961 movie directed by Xie Jin, The Red Detachment of Women. The film showcases the struggles of an enslaved girl, Wu Qiong Hua, in the hands of her master and her journey towards becoming a revolutionary force. Qiong Hua suffers humiliation and torture at the hands of her oppressive master Nan Batian until her savior, Hong Changqing, rescues her away under the pretense of buying her to be his slave. Hong Chang asks her to join the red detachment of women where she undergoes training and rises up the ranks to becoming a formidable revolutionary fighter.
