hile you are watching your chosen performance, note various aspects of the production. What do you like and dislike about this production? If you are already familiar with the play, note how closely the production follows the original script: Has anything been cut or added? Has the director taken liberties in casting the characters? Is the setting different from the original play? Consider the costume choices. Pay attention to the set and the props. Has the director chosen to be more minimal in these areas? Do you find anything distracting about this performance? Does the music go well with the play? Why have any of these choices been made? Consider whether or not you would recommend this play to a friend. Jot down a few notes at intermission and after the play. While analyzing the different aspects of the performance, focus on at least three different areas of the production the appeal to you most. Choose from the following: script, acting, casting, lighting, set design, costume design, music/sound design, makeup, props. Organize your review accordingly. The introduction should include the following: the title of the play, the name of the playwright, and any pertinent historical information regarding the author. Include the place and date of the production you attended, and the name of the production company. The thesis of your review should include a general impression of the relative success or failure of the production, based on what you actually saw and on your initial impression of how the play should have been performed.

‘Rent’ is a production with lyrics and music composed by Jonathan Larson. Larson was also the lyricist and playwright of the music. It presents the story of a group of fledgling artists struggling to make their life in Manhattan East Village beneath the shadow of HIV/AIDS. Larson was inspired by Puccini’s tragedy ‘La Boheme.' He sings about the struggling artists, homeless folks, those who have AIDS and other denizens of the neighborhood. The main actors are A. Pascal (known as Rodger in the play), an HIV-positive artist struggling to compose his last great song before he perishes, and Mark is a roommate and a filmmaker tracking lives in the Manhattan and live in the motley crowd. Other characters include Mimi, J. Jefferson, A. D. S. schunard and others. The characters are squatters in Benny’s building. Benny is a former classmate who has become wealthier. In the opening line, Benny demands a year’s worth rent and is answered in a chorus asserting that they won’t pay. Henceforth, the music was adapted and transformed into a movie by the Broadway Production in 2005. A process that was directed by C. Columbus and R. Cavallo produced the soundtrack. Hence, the play forms the center of the study.
The production is a guiding vision and has minimal deviations from the original Broadway. The track is renovated by an excellent addition to three backup ballerinas, brilliant performance art and a taste of humor attached from the community’s antiquity.
