The movie China Behind is can be said to be the most controversial and daring film of the 70s era. China was not as it is today and people lived in fear and as per the ideologies of communism. It was directed by Tang Shu Shuen, and even though it was completed in 1974, it was first screened in 1978. This was mainly because of the issues the movie was tackling. The themes in the movie targeted mainland China as well as Hong Kong. So, it did not take long before the movie was banned in both China and British Hong Kong. China Behind attacks communism while also showing the flaws of capitalist Hong Kong at the same time. Below is an elucidation of how it challenges the mythology of communism as well as the mythology of capitalist societies like British Hong Kong.
First of all, it challenges the mythology of communism by showing how people lived in a state of fear. In mainland China, one had to express their support for Mao outwardly. As seen in one scene as swimmers come out of the pool, the instructor uses Mao teachings to help communicate his point. Everything revolved around Mao and his teachings. The escapees had to keep their plans a secret and never spoke about their true feelings regarding the regime, or they could have been lynched. People had bought into the teachings of Mao, and anyone who did not heap praise to him was considered an outcast.
