Reflection Paper
Understanding the importance of cinematic themes concerning historical events is important for any student. It allows him to be able to have a better image of what happened during the past, as well as critically analyze the accuracy of such films. Accordingly, this article would focus on the film by Rithy Panh entitled The Missing Picture. This film illustrates some of the stories and events that have happened during the reign of the Khmer Rouge. Specifically, the analysis would focus on how the cinematic theme relates to these past events as well as its appeal to its audience through the form or a ‘film-about-a-lost-film’ genre. All in all, I believe that by utilizing both historical footage and combining them through artistic means, a stronger emotional appeal is built.
Emotional Appeal
The film entitled The Missing Picture portrays the events that have happened during the reign of the Khmer Rouge. For the most part, these events were reiterated by the director through the use of figurines. However, about half of the whole film portrays real footage based on news stories and documentaries during those days.
One of the main points that the viewers would recognize upon the viewing of the film is the nostalgic and poignant appeal of the film. Although the Khmer Rouge was characterized by a violent disposition on the part of the government, a number of the scenes portray happy themes.
