Movie Review: 12 Years a Slave
12 Years a Slave (2013), directed by Steve McQueen, was released on October 18, 2013. The film is an adaptation of the Twelve Years a Slave (1853), a historical memoir by Solomon Northup. Northup was a free African-American born in New York by a freed slave but was kidnapped in Washington, D.C. Upon his kidnapping, Northup was sold as a slave in 1841 by two gunmen. The film scenes take place at the State of Louisiana where Northup has worked in plantations for 12 years before he is set free. From the American Pluralism perspective, students in this class should watch the film to learn more about slavery and the events that happened before the Civil War. By understanding that decision making processes and governance are influenced by many individual groups, the concerns of the minority groups, such as the African Americans can be heard. Pluralism defines that individual groups have their privileges to exist within the larger society while holding their unique traditional heritages.
