Movie Review: 12 Years a Slave
12 Years a Slave (2013), directed by Steve McQueen, was released on October 18, 2013. The film is an adaptation of the Twelve Years a Slave (1853), a historical memoir by Solomon Northup. Northup was a free African-American born in New York by a freed slave but was kidnapped in Washington, D.C. Upon his kidnapping, Northup was sold as a slave in 1841 by two gunmen. The film scenes take place at the State of Louisiana where Northup has worked in plantations for 12 years before he is set free. From the American Pluralism perspective, students in this class should watch the film to learn more about slavery and the events that happened before the Civil War.
